| Outcomes: Students are able to understand how both intra- and extra-muscular fuel stores are mobilised and utilised during physical activity; comprehend how fuel metabolism is affected by exercise training and metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes; and understand the biochemical principles underlying sports nutrition and the mechanisms of weight control. Students also develop a critical attitude toward general beliefs and scientific knowledge. |

| Content: This unit describes and explains the mechanisms whereby the different fuels are used during physical activity. Students explore the mechanisms by which fuel utilisation is regulated and affected by exercise training and metabolic diseases. There is an introduction to several aspects of sports nutrition including carbohydrate, fat and protein nutrition for athletes. Molecular mechanisms of weight control, obesity and of the links between obesity and metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes are explained. |

| Assessment: This comprises weekly assignments (20 per cent) and a written examination (80 per cent). |
